Code of conduct
Welcome to The Expats community, your go-to spot to meet new friends, ask questions, find love, find clubs and groups, and much more. We are building an inclusive community where everybody should feel welcome. In this spirit, please read our code of conduct and act accordingly to keep this place groovy.
Our values
Openness
Portugal attracts many expats who have different backgrounds and origins. We must stay open and curious about these cultural differences. Ignorance should be the starting place for curiosity and reflection, not bigotry and bullying.
Respect
Regardless of how we feel about a subject or someone, we will respect it. We don’t have to agree with everything but we have to respect that to each their own.
Care
As we are trying to gather here to build a community of expats, we will only succeed if we care about one another. People here are not your competition or the reason for your illness. We are all here to connect and build deeper roots in the country we’ve fallen in love with.
The Expats’ etiquette
Rules
Be an orc: (open, respectful, and caring) Make sure to follow our core values and everything should be fine. We may come from different backgrounds but we truly believe that these 3 values are the foundation of any human culture.
Show appreciation: We are here to help each other, that’s what community is for. But it doesn’t mean that you can or should only take from the community. We incentivize everyone to give first and give more than you take. And regardless of how much you take, always show appreciation for your fellow expats with a thank you.
Additional note: make sure to extend a warm welcome to newcomers as well.
No self-promotion: This is a place where people come to hang out. Promotion of products and services will not be permitted. If you wish to collaborate with The Expats, please get in touch with us here.
Respect other’s privacy: If you recognize someone using a pseudonym or disagreeing with someone, please keep it to yourself and respect other people’s privacy. This community is not a public stage to expose and humiliate another member.
Don’t spam the community: Please don’t post the same messages/content multiple times on different channels.
Reporting violations and sanctions
If you witness a violation of these rules or anything suspicious, please inform The Expats team directly in Slack or you can send an email to community@theexpats.com.
Violations will not be tolerated. First-time offenders will receive a warning and will be asked to read the code of conduct again. Repeat offenders will be banned from the community. Depending on the gravity of the violations, we reserve the right to ban first-time offenders as well.
Additional Information
The Expats may use information publicly available in the Slack channel for promotion purposes. This includes your profile picture, full name, and city of living and origin.
