Write for the magazine

Hi writer and thank you for your interest in our magazine.

Before you submit your ideas we have a couple of things we need to cover:

First things first, we are glad that you are here and want to make sure we answer any questions you might have about the magazine.

On this page, we will cover everything on:

  • Who is the magazine for?
  • Our editorial guideline.
  • The type of content we can accept.
  • How and where to submit your ideas?

So without further ado let’s dive into it.

Who is the magazine for?

We are always looking for new and brilliant contributor to make sure we built an award-winning magazine that support the Portuguese expats’ community. Wether you have exceptional skills in writing, photography, design, art and want to share with our amazing and eclectic community, we would love to hear from you and give you a platform to reach more people.

We are looking for people with a unique and beautiful voice. No Hemingway app here, you don’t need to write for 7th grader, we want your voice and style to transcribe. We are not afraid of strong opinion pieces as long as it’s still in the respect of others.

Our editorial guideline.

Our editors reserve the right to pass on any contribution if it doesn’t meet our editorial standards and guidelines.

Submissions/articles can be on any subject that affects expats living in Portugal. We tend to use 7 categories to classify our articles:

  • Bars & restaurants
  • Nightlife
  • Lifestyle
  • Culture
  • Business & Money
  • Real estate
  • Expats (opinion piece from expats thought leaders + their interview)

So what are we looking for exactly?

Successful contributions are personality-driven posts that teach or entertain our readers about life in Portugal.

We seek:

  • Original concepts, compelling arguments, and high-quality writing.
  • Articles must match the tone and style of the magazine. We aim to promote a modern, yet anchored-in traditions, Mediterranean lifestyle.
  • A few links to other articles from our magazine.
  • Proper attribution of your sources if they apply.

Note that all content and final decisions are at the editorial team’s discretion.

This includes:

  • Editing and adapting your article content for search optimization, accuracy, comprehensiveness, and new information as information within the original piece becomes outdated or requires reevaluation.
  • Including calls-to-action to The Expats’s content and offers (e.g., downloadable e-books).
  • Use your guest author photo across our content (e.g., on The Expat’s social media channels and email newsletters).
  • Remove the article from the magazine.
Last but not least, we will publish content that only exists on The Expats. While we encourage you to share your piece with your community and link back to it, you may not republish your article on your own blog, Medium, LinkedIn or any similar platform/website.

The type of content we accept.

Opinion piece/expats experience stories: Experienced anything recently that you feel could entertain or be useful for your fellow expats, we would love to read it.  We are suckers for good endings and good writing that transport us into someone else shoes.

Review of new places: Did you try a new bar, restaurant, and/or club recently? Tell us all about it as we love to try new things when it comes with a great recommendation.

Note that we will not accept:

  • Anything that has already been published in our magazine or somewhere else on the internet.
  • Anything too promotional for you, your company, or products/services
  • Anything that looks like a link-building scheme.
  • Anything disrespectful, offensive, or overly critical of an individual or a company.

How and where to submit your ideas?

To be able to submit your articles you will need to follow a couple of guidelines first:

  • Make sure there isn’t a similar article in the magazine.
  •  Your article must be written in a Google Doc with the “anyone with the link” permission. (note that only finished articles will be considered)
